Hello,

a bit about me:

Hi, I am Yili Zhang. I came to the States from China at 19 years old, and recently completed my bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University. In the past three years, I have been working on various hands-on Robotics and Mechatronics projects as a paid Undergraduate Research Assistance (URA). Four-year college life oversea gave me not only cultural adaptability and independnece, but also work ethics. I value working with ambitious and passionate people of different backgrounds and enjoy challenging complex problems via hard-working and active learning.

Outreach

International Conference on Social Robotics (ICSR) 2016

I co-published the research papaer "Sketched Floor Plans versus SLAM maps: A Comparison" in 2016 and presented it at the International Conference on Social Robotics (ICSR) in Kansas City. In the presentation, I presented our research methods and conclusion to world prestigious Human-Robot Interaction Roboticists, scholars and entrepreneurs, and answered various of professional questions. During the two-day conference, I was presented with many excellent presentations and was informed the updatest knowledges in Human-Robot Interation. I also communicated with attended roboticists, psychologist and philosophers on various of topics. I really enjoyed that experience and ended up learned a lot from people with different backgrounds.

Oregan Best Fest 2016

I participated the Oregon Best Fest 2016 at the World Trade Center of Portland, Oregon. As a member of the Energy Innovation Lab of Oregon State University, I demonstrated the co-functional AC system to renewable-energy scientists, entrepreneurs and journalists from all over the world. At the activity, I also witnessed variety of environmentally friendly projects that contribute to a greener future from both universities and start-up companies. Oregon Best Fest has been a platform where renewable-energy scientists and companies come out to gain investers by peaching their ideas. I found the experience very enlightening by actually seeing the coomunications between scientists/entrepreneurs and investors for the purpose of win-win cooperation.

Hobbies

Chinese classical Instrument: Erhu

Erhu, also called "China's Violin", is the most typical Chinese instrument. Prior coming to the States, I had 12 years experiences of playing Erhu, and received the highest official certification at 12 years old. The experience of learning and performing Erhu gave me a good basis on studying any other stringed instruments quickly, which is why I self-taught playing guitar later. After arrived in the U.S., Erhu became a special ability for me to cummunicate Chinese culture with the others, for example, the picture on the left (me left) shows my co-performance on Oregon State University's Culture's Night in year 2015.

Calligraphy

I have been having five year's experience on calligraphing. Calligraphy is a typical art of meditation in both ancient and modern China. When calligraphing, the calligrapher is supposed to take good care of both individual word and the systematic organization, which requires highly-concentrated energy and attention. Calligraphy has been one of the methods that I apply to balance with my intence engineering life.

Folk Guitar

I have been self-teaching on how to play guitar since my freshmen year. As I had stringed instrument (Erhu) basis, I picked up basic skills such as chord progressions very fast. I also attended the Guitar Glub at the freshmen year and made lots of friends who were also interested in music. Folk guitar musics are full of freedom and liberty, which has always been my source of energy and creativity.

Yoga

Yoga, as an old Indian exercise, has been considered as one of the perfect combinations of religional and physical activity. I have been having two-year experiences on practicing yoga and benefited a lot from its meditation wisdoms. Yoga emphasizes the balance and harnmony, both of different parts of physical body and between physical body and mental existance. Practicing yoga has been the method besides calligraphy for me to balance my tense engineering life.
